Members of the Orthopterists' Society and others doing serious
work with Orthoptera are encouraged to participate in the development of the Orthoptera
Species File Online. In most cases this will mean correcting or adding information
fitting the individual's specific research interest.
The classification and nomenclature used for the database should
reflect the most recent published information, but there are exceptions.
- Unpublished information may be added under certain circumstances
- If significant information about an unnamed taxon is publicly available, such as
in another website, the taxon may be entered with a reference or link to that information.
For example, see
Anaxipha n. sp. B.
- An editor may add significant unpublished information by adding a "scrutiny" record
which contains an author or authors, a year, and a comment. However, the classification and nomenclature
may not be altered because of the information. For example, see
Trigonidium infuscata. This is done to call
attention to the next author who publishes something about the taxon or group.
Once the information has been published, the scrutiny record may
be deleted.
- If a change in classification reflects a subjective judgment, and the matter is
of sufficient interest that conflicting opinions are likely to be published; then
the editor may delay entering the change until a predominent opinion emerges from
multiple authors. However, each conflicting citation should be entered with
a note giving the opinion of that author.
